Genome + iPhone = Helps Transform Individual Health Care
August 28, 2009 at 8:01 pm

With employees spread across five continents, effective mobile communications are essential for Illumina, a San Diego, CA-based biotechnology company that designs breakthrough tools for genetic analysis. Using iPhone, sales reps can track customers, executives can manage employees, and everyone can stay in touch. And soon Illumina will make it possible for consumers to carry their personal genomes with them on iPhone.

iPhone was an obvious technology choice, says Jay Flatley, Illumina's President and CEO. "First and foremost, it's a great phone. But what our employees need goes well beyond that. They need a computer in their hands that can do calculations and data searches, and can manage sales using SalesForce Mobile. Because of the flexibility of the interface, iPhone was the ideal tool for us."

With iPhone apps like Workday HR management software and Cisco WebEx Meeting Center, Illumina executives can do everything from tracking payroll to participating in meetings wherever they are. "iPhone has improved the overall productivity of people at Illumina," says Scott Kahn, Illumina's Chief Information Officer. "It's rare that you deploy a tool and don't get any negative feedback. But with iPhone, the first response is usually 'Thank you.'"

Free TXT Message App saves some cash!
August 26, 2009 at 11:37 am

TextPlus iPhone App Allows Free Texting
This TXT has been brought to you by ADs! TextPLus is a fairly new app that offers unlimited free text messaging on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Sounds to good to be true?  Yes, nothing is for free! The app gives you free TXTing by selling ad space at the bottom of the screen. The app was developed by Gogii, a new start up backed with $5.2 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers' iFund, which invests in firms making iPhone applications. The company does pay AT&T for each TXT message sent, but hopes it can sell the Ad Space for more coinage turning each TXT into a small profit. TextPlus has only been on the market for three months and already has over 800,000 users. This app includes a number of features that are a plus over the normal SMS.

  • Free Unlimited Texts, yes 100% Free.
  • Group Texting
  • Push Notifications

While using the app this morning, only one function stood out that I didn't care for.  When sending a TXT message it shows up from another phone number 606-110-02 and this annoying "(Reply w/your msg, or reply MENU for options)" attached with each message. For those unfortunate non-smart phone users that receive messages sent by TextPlus, the extra directions takes up valuable screen space.  I don't think I'll be dropping the SMS from my AT&T plan just yet.

French Security Gaurd Reports Exploding iPhone
August 25, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Exploding iPhone Reported

Another iPhone explosion has been reported in France becoming the second incident in just weeks.  Gaurd Yassine Bouhadi, a 26-year-old supermarket cop from the southeastern town of Villevieille, said he was typing a text message on Monday afternoon when the screen exploded.

The young man claims he was hit in the eye with a glass shard.  Yassine told the press he was "very angry" and planned to file a suite for damages. "I want an explanation about this damned telephone," said Bouhadi, who bought the hugely-popular smartphone device for 600 euros (850 dollars) three months ago and now wants his money back.

If this happened to me and I had glass stuck in my eye, I'd be more then just a little angry.  I'd be freaking furious and shopping for a lawyer that would bring home millions with a lawsuit. Somehow I don't believe that all he was doing was just typing.

Sirius XM Secret iPhone Accessory – SkyDock

Sirius XM Secret iPhone Accessory - SkyDock

Sirius XM is expected to announce a new device in a few days rumored to be called "SkyDock".  However the admin from XMFan.com has broken the news and posted the details a little early. The XM SkyDock is a docking station for the iPod Touch or iPhone that turns it into a SATELLITE XM Radio receiver using the SiriusXM iPhone App!  The kit will include a XM antenna, power cord (also featuring new transmitter technology), and a small docking station.

This new docking station accessory could be a big break for the troubled satellite radio company.  This has the potential of bringing many new users to the service and becoming the #1 subscription based streaming music application. While an exact price has yet to be announced XMFan believes it will retail for less then $100.

Iphone Football Game Coming Soon: Madden 2010

Iphone Football Game Coming Soon: Madden 2010
Living in Texas football is a part of everyday life and the beginning of football season generates a buzz like nothing else. For me that buzz has carried over with EA's announcement that they will bring Madden to the iPhone.  The game is expected to hit the app store September 10th in coordination with the first official game of the season between the Titans and the Steelers. Cnet has posted several screen shots that shows how up to date the NFL roster is by including Brette Favre and Michael Vick with their new teams. The gameplay and looks  appear to be very similar to NFL 2010. The virtual joystick will be located on the left combined with contextual action buttons on the right. I'll be sure to do a complete review once the game hits my iPhone! View more screenshots after the jump.

Organize your iPhone Apps with Movement

Have you thought about reorganizing your apps but the thought of moving the apps one by one is just to painful? Now, there is an app for that thanks to the work of Jeff Stieler.  Movement installs on the mac and and imports the app layout directly from your iPhone via USB. It gives you an exact appearance of your app locations and allows you to easily drag and drop icons into the order your after. This utility is very handy however the iPhone must be jailbroken in order to use it. Check out the "how to" video after the jump.  This concept has also been rumored in the next version of iTunes.
