Game Developer's iPhone Engine Unity 1.5 released
Unity Technologies has released a new version of the popular multiplatform engine for iPhone game developers. The updated gaming engine v1.5 includes enhancements such as, Full support for iPhone 3GS, Built-in anti-piracy protection that detects modifications to the app, Video playback, GPS, on-screen keyboard support, additional texture shading, automatic fallback solution, and the engine now takes advantage of the VFP coprocessor making animation skinning up to 4x faster.

Nicholas Francis, chief creative officer at Unity Technologies said:

We're all about making the leanest, meanest development tools, and this release cements that commitment. With Unity iPhone 1.5, we've squeezed out performance everywhere we could and added a bunch of features to help people take advantage of the new iPhone models.

Game Developers can try out the engine free for 30 days by using the trial version or purchase the iPhone basic license for $399. Other options are available for more advanced users.  For information visit http://unity3d.com/unity/ or discuss this with other developers at the iPhone Developers Forum.

Free TXT Message App saves some cash!

TextPlus iPhone App Allows Free Texting
This TXT has been brought to you by ADs! TextPLus is a fairly new app that offers unlimited free text messaging on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Sounds to good to be true?  Yes, nothing is for free! The app gives you free TXTing by selling ad space at the bottom of the screen. The app was developed by Gogii, a new start up backed with $5.2 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers' iFund, which invests in firms making iPhone applications. The company does pay AT&T for each TXT message sent, but hopes it can sell the Ad Space for more coinage turning each TXT into a small profit. TextPlus has only been on the market for three months and already has over 800,000 users. This app includes a number of features that are a plus over the normal SMS.

  • Free Unlimited Texts, yes 100% Free.
  • Group Texting
  • Push Notifications

While using the app this morning, only one function stood out that I didn't care for.  When sending a TXT message it shows up from another phone number 606-110-02 and this annoying "(Reply w/your msg, or reply MENU for options)" attached with each message. For those unfortunate non-smart phone users that receive messages sent by TextPlus, the extra directions takes up valuable screen space.  I don't think I'll be dropping the SMS from my AT&T plan just yet.
